the richest and most famous toast in the United States!
The origins of Sloppy Joe lie in Sioux City, Iowa, but it has spread throughout North America, including Canada.
It is a tasty toast, with a slightly sweet and sour note, a mix of really explosive flavors, pleasant to bite: in short, modifying the slogan of the famous chips “if you don’t get your fingers dirty, you only half enjoy”!
The recipe of Sloppy Joe is very old, it already appeared in the cookbooks of the late nineteenth century even if it had other names, such as Toasted Deviled Hamburger or Beef Mironton.
The current name is probably due to the person who invented the version we all know: the cook in fact was called Joe and made the dish famous in the ’30s.
Ingredients for 4 people
- 8 slices – bread for toast
- 500 gr – ground beef
- ½ – onion
- 100 gr – cheddar
- 200 gr – ketchup
- 2 teaspoons – brown sugar
- 1 – clove of garlic
- 3 – tablespoons – extra virgin olive oil
- 1 – glass of water
- a good pinch – salt
-to taste – pepper
To prepare Sloppy Joe, the first thing to do is finely chop the onion.
In a saucepan or frying pan, brown the garlic in the oil and add the ground meat.
Sauté the mixture over medium heat for about 5 minutes: when it has taken on color, add the onions, stir well and add the ketchup and cheddar.
Stir the mixture, then add the brown sugar and stir again.
Add a glass of water to the mixture, cover with a lid and cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes.
Remove the lid and let the excess water evaporate.
At this point all you have to do is season your slices of toast with the mixture you have made and enjoy some excellent Sloppy Joes.
Always serve the Sloppy Joes hot.
You can accompany them with salad or french fries.
